On January 16, 2024, I went in for my first surgery ever in 67 years. I had broken my ankle from a fall on January 3rd. I researched doctors in the Anchorage area and chose Dr. Daniel Brown who worked for Orthopedic Research Center in Alaska (ORCA) located on Regional Hospital grounds. I met the surgeon Dr. Brown and the anesthesiologist Dr. Luis Perez 30-45 minutes before my surgery took place. I was encouraged to get the surgery otherwise there was a good chance that it would not heal properly and I would likely be in pain for the rest of my life. After my surgery my right foot, ankle, and up to my knee was numb. The anesthesia should have worn off within several hours max. Six days into my recovery, Dr. Luis Perez (anesthesiologist) made a house call to check on the progress or lack there of, of my foot, my ankle, and my leg which were all still numb and I was unable to move my toes or foot. It was at that point that I realized something was terribly wrong (doctors rarely do house calls). After about a month, the numbness went away and was replaced by excruciating, unbearable pain that was compared to prolonged childbirth, amputation, cancer, etc. I was bedridden for 4-5 months. I relied on a friend and my wheelchair to get me to my appointments. I followed through with 99% of the referrals from Dr. Brown. Dr. Brown and Dr. Perez, the two main characters in the surgery,. both told me “we need to figure out who’s at fault”. From that point forward, they excused any responsibility and referred me to an array of tests. It was a routine ankle surgery, doctors have malpractice insurance, they are human and make mistakes, I understand that. Moving forward, once a month Dr. Luis Perez phoned me to check on my progress. During my last phone call with him I confronted the situation and pointed out the obvious cause of my new condition which is called Chronic regional pain syndrome or CRPS. I lost my mobility, my independence, I was unable to drive my car, I could not work, I was in excruciating pain, my whole life changed in an instant. I asked Dr Luis Perez if there was any help to access without spending the next 7 years pursuing the matter in court. Insured me that he would check with his colleagues and get back to me. Approximately two months after this conversation, I sent him an email. He replied back and implied that I was a litigious person. I have never sued anyone in my life and I am 68 years old. But when they know, for a fact, that “they messed up”, why does the patient have to pursue justification by legal means? I am writing this review on August 2, 2025 more than a year and a half and I am still in pain without relief.
